NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Early in the 1999-2000 season, the Tufts women's basketball team is proving itself as a second-half squad. In each of their three games, the Jumbos have either come back or put away their opponents with a strong second half. That was certainly the case in Thursday's 69-51 victory at UMass-Dartmouth.
The game was tied 34-34 at the half, but the Jumbos out-scored the Corsairs 35-17 in the second half to post the win and move to 3-0 overall. In Tuesday's win over Babson, Tufts turned a 29-28 halftime lead into a 59-46 rout. In the season-opener versus Johnson & Wales, the Jumbos trailed 39-31 at the break and won 75-63.
Head coach Janice Savitz hopes her team will start stronger eventually, but for now it's getting the job done. At UMass-Dartmouth, Tufts defended the Corsairs into 21.4 percent shooting (6/28) in the second half while knocking down 12 of 27 themselves (44.4).
Freshman Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY) continued to impress, scoring a game-high 15 points. Senior co-captain Molly Baker (Northfield, MA) put up 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while junior point guard Shira Fishman (Silver Spring, MD) added nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
The Jumbos are off over the weekend then play at Regis on Tuesday (Dec. 7) at 7 pm.
