CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior co-captain Molly Baker (Northfield, MA) hit two free throws with 3:20 remaining to give Tufts (7-2) a lead it would not relinquish as the Jumbos held on to defeat MIT (2-10), 50-47.
The host Engineers trailed by nine points with just under eight minutes remaining. MIT's Amy Mok buried a three-point shot to tie the game at 41-41 with 5:30 left. The Engineers briefly took the lead on an offensive rebound basket by Katy Conley, but Baker answered 17 seconds later on a short jumper, and gave the Jumbos the edge with her two free throws.
Baker finished with 12 for Tufts as teammates Katie Kehrberger (Waldwick, NJ) and Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY) each added 10. The Jumbos, ranked fourth in the country with a 31.3 field goal percentage defense entering the week, limited the Engineers to 18 of 50 shooting (36%).
The game was the first of five straight on the road for Tufts. They play at Lasell College on Saturday (Jan. 22) at 4 pm.
