MEDFORD, Mass. -- Freshman Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY) continued her red-hot play by scoring 22 points and grabbing nine rebounds to help the Tufts Jumbos to a 77-61 victory over the Hamilton Continentals in New England women's college basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
Goodman had 10 points as Tufts stormed to an 18-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game. The Jumbos led by 14 at the break, 38-24, and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The visiting Continentals, who were led by 25 points from exciting guard Jenny Russell (Pawling, NY), pulled within 14 on a few occasions in the second half, but could get no closer.
Tufts also got 17 points and 10 rebounds from senior co-captain Molly Baker (Northfield, MA) and 12 points with seven rebounds from senior Karen Robator (Bedford, NH). Junior point guard Shira Fishman (Silver Spring, MD) handed out eight of the team's season-high 22 assists. The Jumbos surpassed last season's victory total with their 10th of this year.
Hamilton, which lost its 11th straight and dropped to 3-14 overall, played much better in the second half after shooting 28.6 percent (8-28) with 16 turnovers in the first half. Russell was fearless in driving to the hoop and was often rewarded with free throws, hitting 13 of 14 for the game. Senior co-captain Sabrina Valenta (Frankfort, NY) was also effective with 13 points for the visitors.
The win was Tufts' fourth straight in this series. Goodman scored 36 points in an 80-73 Tufts loss at Clark on Thursday. It was the third-best single-game total in team history. For the week she averaged 29 points on 62.5-percent shooting (20-32) with 7.5 rebounds per. She was 18 of 19 (94.7%) from the free throw line in the two games.
