MEDFORD, Mass. -- Visiting Colby College posted a 66-60 victory over the Tufts Jumbos in a tightly contested New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball game on Tuesday night. Sophomore Katy Lawson (Mount Desert Island, ME) scored four points in the final 1:20 to help lift the White Mules in the league-opener for both squads.
Colby led 35-33 at the break and the margin did not exceed six points for the entire second half. Colby took a 54-49 lead on a three-point play by senior co-captain Jenn Freese (Veazie, ME) with 8:45 left in regulation. Tufts then surged to a 60-59 advantage at 2:36 following behind eight points (two three-pointers) by freshman guard Hilary Dunn (Medfield, MA). A free throw by Colby freshman Sarah Walsh (Catonsville, MD) tied the score at 60-60 entering the final two minutes. The Tufts offense then sputtered a bit while Colby got a lay-up by Lawson, two free throws from Freese and two more freebies by Lawson with 20 seconds left to seal the win.
Colby, which improved to 8-4 overall, got 16 points and 11 rebounds from Walsh. Dunn had 14 points for the Jumbos (6-2) and freshman Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY) added 11 points and 11 rebounds. The victory was Colby's fifth straight in the series.
