MEDFORD – Freshman Kristi Royer (Lewiston, ME) scored 16 points to lead four players in double-figures as the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears posted a 72-62 victory over the Tufts University Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.

The game was the regular-season finale for both teams, who are long shots for post-season berths. The victory lifted Bowdoin to a winning record at 12-11 overall (4-5 NESCAC), while Tufts dropped to 15-8 overall and 3-6 in the league. The Polar Bears shot 63.3 percent from the field (31-49) for the game, off-setting 31 turnovers. In contrast, host Tufts was cold all afternoon and finished 20 of 74 from the field (27 percent).

Bowdoin led 36-29 at the half, then survived a turnover-filled, seven-minute scoreless stretch in the second half. The Polar Bears led, 44-32, following Royer's basket at 16:07, then did not score again until 9:36 remained. Tufts could only cut the margin to 44-41 during that span. Bowdoin then outscored the Jumbos, 15-6, over the next six minutes to take a 59-47 lead on two free throws by Royer at 3:46. The Polar Bear lead was at least 10 points the rest of the way.

Tufts had a slow start that typified the day. The Jumbos missed their first 13 shots as Bowdoin surged to a 12-3 lead seven minutes into the game. Tufts didn't get its first field goal until junior co-captain Meghann Gill (Blasdell, NY) drained a three with 12:20 to play until halftime. The Jumbos got hot at that point, and battled back to take a 29-28 lead on two free throws by freshman Erin Harrington (Fall River, MA). Bowdoin scored the last eight points of the first half and never trailed again.

The victory was Bowdoin's fifth in a row against Tufts. The Bears also got 13 points and six rebounds from sophomore Jessica Farmer (Longmeadow, MA), including a key three-point play that gave them a 57-47 lead at 4:15. Tufts got 20 points from sensational freshman Emily Goodman (Briarcliff, NY) and 12 points with 13 rebounds (11 offensive) from senior co-captain Molly Baker (Northfield, MA).
