TEN JUMBOS HONORED ON WINTER ALL-ACADEMIC NESCAC TEAM

MEDFORD -- Ten seniors and juniors from ten Tufts University winter sports teams were named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) All-Academic Team recently. Each of the 11 NESCAC schools nominates ten athletes, five women and five men, in the fall, winter and spring seasons. Each student is a valuable member of their team, and must have at least a 3.35 cumulative grade point average.

This season's Tufts honorees are: Peter Berkowitz (Mount Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley), Abi Cushman (Niantic, CT/East Lyme), Hillary Dunn (Medfield, MA/Medfield), Jordan Kolasinski (Dobbs Ferry, NY/Hackley), Timm Schatz (Mequon, WI/Homestead), Adam Sharp (Alexandria, NH/Sent Bani School), Jessica Trombly (Nashua, NH/Bishop Guertin), Becky Ullman (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury), Kasara Williams (Fortuna, CA), and Jim Wilson (Rockland, ME/Landon Rockport).

Cushman, a senior art history major, spent the Women's Squash season playing in the number two slot. She recorded her biggest win against Haverford on February 1, when she beat her opponent 3-0 (1, 4, 5). Berkowitz, a senior economics major, swam a variety of events for the Men's Swimming & Diving team, which finished third at the NESCAC Championships. His best events were the 100 and 200 Meter Butterfly, which he swam most frequently. He finished fifth in the 200 Butterfly (2:27.59) against Bowdoin on December 7.

Dunn, the captain of the Women's Basketball team, finished her career with 306 assists, third place on the all-time Tufts assists list. The political science major helped the Jumbos to a 17-7 record, their best since the 1990-91 season, and a NESCAC Tournament berth. Kolasinski, a junior art history major, played in the sixth and seventh spots on the Men's Squash team, which finished 19th nationally. His 11 wins in 16 matches were the most of any Jumbo player.

Junior computer engineer Schatz is a forward on the Hockey team. He recorded one goal and two assists on a team that qualified for the NESCAC Tournament for the first time since joining the competitive conference last season. Sharp, a middle distance runner on the Men's Track & Field team, finished seventh in the 1,000 Meter Run (2:34.68) at the New England Division III Championships on February 22. The senior mechanical engineer also finished tenth in the 1,500 Meter Run (4:02.40) at the same meet.

Trombly has had great success with the Women's Track & Field team this winter, recently winning five events at the New England Division III Championships on February 22. The junior economics major won the 200 Meters (25.83 seconds), the 400 Meters (57.70 seconds), the 55 Meter Hurdles (8.61 seconds), the Long Jump (17 feet, 7.5 inches) and she anchored the winning 4x400 Meters relay team (4:00.91). Ullman, a senior international relations major, swam various races for the Women's Swimming & Diving team. She finished second in the 200 Breaststroke (2:40.15) - first among the Jumbos - in a 158-142 win over Bowdoin College on December 7. Her best finish at the NESCAC Championships was a 17th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:13.45).

Williams, a member of the Women's Fencing squad, had quite a day at the National Intercollegiate Women's Fencing Association Championships on March 1. The senior international relations major won the individual saber title, 15-9, against Temple's Sakinah Shaahid, who was fourth at last year's NCAA Championships. Wilson, a senior mechanical engineer, averaged 10.2 points for the Men's Basketball team. He was co-captain of the team, which won its first-round NESCAC Tournament game against Middlebury College before falling to nationally ranked and eventual tournament Champion Williams College.
