BRIGHAM, DEVINE, 4x400 RELAY WIN NEW ENGLAND TRACK TITLES
MEDFORD – The Tufts University Men's Indoor Track & Field team won three titles at the 2003 New England Division III Championship Meet hosted by MIT on Saturday.
Sophomore Nate Brigham (Penacook, NH/Merrimack Valley) won the 5,000 Meters with a time of 15 minutes, 2.65 seconds. He finished five seconds ahead of second place Neal Holtschulte of Williams College. Brigham was a Cross Country All-American during the fall season when he finished 11th at the NCAA National Championship Race.
Senior tri-captain Greg Devine (Springfield, MA/Central) won the 55 Meter Hurdles, edging out classmate and fellow tri-captain
Bryan Pitko (Arlington, MA/Arlington). Devine ran a time of 7.56 seconds in the final to a 7.69 by Pitko. Sophomore
Nate Thompson (South Portland, ME/South Portland) was seventh in 8.16 seconds as Tufts scored 20 points in the event. Devine'
s winning time missed the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 7.54 seconds by .02 of a second. He and Pitko are provisionally qualified for the NCAAs with two regional championship meets remaining before Nationals.
Devine also ran the anchor leg for the 4x400 Meter Relay team that won in a time of 3:22.96. Freshman
Pat Mahoney (Cranford, NJ) led off, handing to classmate Shawn Hansberry (Westford, MA), who handed to sophomore
Raynald Carre (Middletown, CT) and then Devine finished. The Jumbos won by more than three seconds.
Carre and Thompson joined Pitko as Jumbo runner-up'
s at the meet. Carre was second in the 400 Meter Dash with a time of 50.50 seconds, and Thompson jumped 22 feet, 9
3/4 inches for second in the Long Jump.
Tufts placed second as a team with 87 points at the meet behind these outstanding performances.
