Junior shortstop David LeResche's ground-rule double brought home Tufts' go-ahead run

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Tufts University baseball team clinched first place in the NESCAC Eastern Division and hosting rights for the 2010 NESCAC Championship in a doubleheader split with Bowdoin on Saturday. The Jumbos (21-4, 9-2 NESCAC) won the opener, 7-5, to seal first place before Bowdoin (21-10, 4-5 NESCAC) claimed the nightcap, 12-4.

Tied at five apiece entering the sixth inning of game one, Tufts scored a pair of runs to take the lead. Junior 2B Frank Petroskey's (Dallas, TX) cranked a double. Then junior shortstop David LeResche (St. Louis, MO), the leadoff hitter, hit a ground-rule double that bounced over the wall to bring Petroskey in to give the Jumbos the 6-5 lead. After moving to third on a groundout, LeResche scampered home on an Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) groundout to push the lead to 7-5. Junior reliever Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) took it from there, tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless ball for the win.

Sophomore 1B Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) reached base four times for Tufts and scored two runs. Sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) and junior RF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) also collected a pair of hits. Brett Gorman led Bowdoin with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored in the loss as Brendan Garner also collected a pair of hits and a stolen base.

The Bowdoin bats came alive in game two, as the Polar Bears blasted three home runs to take the 12-4 victory. Matt Ruane, Joe Comizio and Adam Marquit all had round-trippers for Bowdoin, who got two hits and three runs scored each from Brendan Garner and Brett Gorman. Carter Butland took care of the rest by tossing 8.0 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing no earned runs in the win. Senior DH Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) reached base four times for the Jumbos as sophomore pitcher Dave Ryan (Trumbull, CT) took the loss after allowing three earned runs in 2.1 frames.

Bowdoin's game-two win stopped their own five-game losing streak, while halting Tufts' 11-game winning streak.

Tufts plays a non-conference game at home against Eastern Connecticut on Monday afternoon at 3 pm. The Polar Bears are at Brandeis on Wednesday at 4 pm.
