Sophomore Kevin Gilchrist tossed a gem to give the Jumbos a series-opening win

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- Tufts University sophomore pitcher Kevin Gilchrist (Medford, MA) tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout in a 5-0 Jumbo win over Bowdoin on Friday evening. The Jumbos take game one of this key three-game NESCAC East Division set and improve to 20-3 overall (8-1 NESCAC), while the Polar Bears lose their fourth straight to fall to 20-9 (3-4 NESCAC).

The Jumbos scored four runs in the first inning, as sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) scored junior shortstop David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. One batter later, junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) scampered home on a wild pitch before sophomore 1B Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) laced a hit to right field that appeared to be caught by Bowdoin's Joe Comizio, but was ruled a hit by the umpire, allowing two additional Tufts runs to come home.

That proved to be all Gilchrist would need, as the sophomore did not allow a hit until the sixth, when Bowdoin's Brendan Garner ripped a double to the left-center gap. Gilchrist walked five and struck out five in the victory. Tim Welch went 3.1 innings for the Polar Bears, permitted four earned runs before giving way to Joe Pace, who tossed 5.2 scoreless innings of relief to keep Bowdoin in the game.

Collins led all players with three hits for Tufts.

The teams will play a twinbill on Saturday beginning at noon.
