Junior Ben Walkler was 2 for 3 in the second-game victory for Tufts

LEWISTON, Me. -- Junior CF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to cap Tufts' rally from a 5-1 deficit, earning the Jumbos a 6-5 victory in Game 2 of their doubleheader at Bates on Saturday afternoon.

Bates (10-5, 1-2 NESCAC East) won Game 1 by a 3-0 score, riding a two-run home run by Noah Lynd and a complete-game shutout pitching performance by Karl Alexander.

Tufts (11-3, 2-1 NESCAC East) took its second win in the three-game series in stunning fashion. Bates starter Ryan Heide limited the Jumbos to one run on four hits through the first seven innings of the game. He came back out to start the eighth, but junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) led off with a single, sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) followed with another single, and junior RF Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT)  walked to load the bases. Pat Murphy came on to relieve Heide from his center field position and struck out sophomore catcher Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) for the first out of the inning, but freshman DH Eric Weikert (Avondale Estates, GA) drew a bases-loaded walk to close the gap to 5-2.

Orlowitz then came up and drove a Murphy offering over the center field fence for his first home run of the season, putting the Jumbos in the lead for the first time all day, including Game 1, at 6-5. Murphy got the last two outs right after, but the damage was done.

Mike Ciummei hit a two-out double to keep Bates' hope alive in the bottom of the ninth, but Tufts reliever Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL) got the third out by inducing a groundout by Rich Velotta for the win, and DeGoti's third save of the season. Tufts reliever Tom Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) earned the win on just 2/3 of an inning of work, moving to 2-0 on the season. The Bobcats had 14 hits in the game to Tufts' eight, leaving 12 men on base.

Bates had kept the momentum from Game 1 going in the first inning, scoring a pair of runs with four consecutive singles off of Tufts starter Derek Miller (Whitman, MA). Tufts got a run back in the second, as Orlowitz was hit by a pitch, stole second and came home on a single by junior 2B Frank Petroskey (Dallas, TX). Bates bumped its lead back to two runs with another run in the third, as Jake Simon and Lynd drew walks and Simon scored on a single by Gordy Webb.

Bates added two runs in the seventh for a 5-1 lead, as Velotta hit a two-out, bases-loaded single up the middle off of Hill to score Chris Burke (leadoff single) and Lynd, who had reached on an error by Miller.

Lynd got the Bobcats off on the right foot in Game 1, following Simon's leadoff single with a home run to right center, his team-high sixth homer of the season. Lynd was 3 for 3 in the game, and 5 for 7 on the day overall. with three runs and three RBIs.

Bates' two-run second followed a key first inning for the Bobcat defense. The Jumbos loaded the bases with just one out, but sophomore starter Karl Alexander worked out of the jam cleanly. Senior 1B Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA) hit a sharp grounder to first baseman Kevin McGregor, who threw home for the force out, then Alexander struck out Walkley swinging to end the threat.

Tufts also put a man on third in the fifth inning and collected two hits in the seventh, but Alexander was able to retain the complete-game shutout, scattering seven hits and four walks while striking out six Jumbos.

Bates handed Tufts starter Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) his first loss of the season. The Bobcats added an insurance run in the fourth, as Lynd led off with a double and Webb followed with an RBI single.

Bates plays at Thomas College on Tuesday at 3:30. Tufts will host Brandeis on Tuesday at 3 pm.
