BUZZARDS BAY -- Junior RF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ)
drove in three runs, including a two-run double that capped a
three-run 10th inning uprising, to lift Tufts to a 6-3 non-league
college baseball victory over Massachusetts Maritime in an extra
inning affair played Thursday afternoon at Commodore Hendy Field.
Rose's two-bagger in the extra frame provided insurance tallies
for the visiting Jumbos (9-2), as junior SS David LeResche (St.
Louis, MO) led off the 10th with an infield single and scored on
a pair of throwing errors to plate go-ahead run. Junior LF Ian
Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) and sophomore Sam Sager 2B
(Cranston, RI) followed with a double and single, respectively,
and scored on Rose's double that capped the rally, as the host
Buccaneers (3-5) received a lead-off single from junior Nick Levitre
(Grafton, MA) in the bottom of the 10th but could not score.
Tufts jumped out to a 1-0 first inning advantage when LeResche
singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and scored on a
Sager sacrifice fly, and the Jumbos extended their lead to 3-0 in
the third on an RBI double by Sager to go with a run-scoring
groundout by Rose. Massachusetts Maritime struck back for a run in
the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout by freshman Zachary
Sullivan (Barnstable, MA), and the Buccaneers evened matters in the
seventh on an RBI groundout off the bat of junior Wil Rodriguez
(Lowell, MA) that preceded fellow junior Greg Wiggin (Marshfield,
Mass.) forcing in the tying run after being hit by a pitch with the
bases loaded, setting up the extra inning heroics for the visitors.
LeResche, Goldberg and Sager each had a pair of hits in the win
for Tufts, which collected seven safeties on the afternoon, while
seven different players rapped out singles in the setback for
Massachusetts Maritime. Sophomore Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL),
the ninth Jumbo pitcher of the game, picked up the win by tossing a
scoreless ninth inning that featured a strikeout, while freshman
Dan Eisenberg (North Andover, MA) struck out the side after
allowing Levitre's leadoff single in the 10th to earn his first save
for the visitors.
Junior Corey Murphy (East Wareham, MA) tossed nine solid innings
of three-hit ball in taking the no decision for the Buccaneers, as
he allowed a pair of earned runs and struck out six in throwing 138
pitches (85 for strikes). Sophomore Louis Ottino (Plymouth, MA)
suffered the setback on the mound for the hosts, allowing four hits
and a pair of earned runs in the decisive 10th frame.
Tufts looks to extend its winning streak to six straight in
opening NESCAC East Division action tomorrow afternoon by heading to
Lewiston, Maine to take on Bates in a conference tilt that begins at
3:00 pm. Massachusetts Maritime opens MASCAC play tomorrow afternoon
by hosting Worcester State in a league twinbill at Commodore Hendy
Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
