Game Box Score

Junior Pat O'Donnell pitched eight innings without allowing an earned run

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Three RBIs apiece from sophomore 3B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) and senior catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA), along with an excellent start from junior pitcher Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) led the Tufts University baseball team to an 11-4 victory at North Carolina Wesleyan College on Thursday afternoon.

The win got Tufts (5-2) back on track after two straight losses. The Battling Bishops lost a three-game winning streak and dropped to 11-13 overall.

The Jumbos scored three runs in the second, two on a double by junior shortstop David LeResche (St. Louis, MO). The Bishops answered with a four-spot in their half of the frame, all unearned. Junior Zach Alexander delivered the big blow with a two-out, two-run single to center.

The Jumbos wasted no time making amends, chasing Bishop starter Chad Womble (1-2) with five more runs in the third. Perry hit a three-run homer to left and Sager reached the left-center gap for a two-run double, putting Tufts up 8-4. O'Donnell would settle in nicely and allow just two hits from the third through eighth inning. Tufts went on to add an insurance run in the fifth and two in the seventh, with two of the three runs scored by LeResche after he was hit by a pitch in the fifth and walked in the seventh.

O'Donnell, who improved to 2-0, allowed six hits and no earned runs in eight innings. Senior Tom Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) hurled a 1-2-3 ninth for the Jumbos. Of the Tufts' 11 hits, Sager finished with three, Perry had two, and junior LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) had two. Alexander's two hits led the Bishops.

The Jumbos are at Randolph-Macon College on Friday at 3 pm. Wesleyan returns to USA South action on Saturday and Sunday at home versus Methodist University. Saturday's game is slated for 1:00 pm with Sunday's game beginning at 2:00 pm.
