GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior 1B Nate Bankoff's (Lynnfield, MA)
two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and sent visiting
Tufts University to a 7-3 baseball win at Guilford College Monday.
Junior RF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) had an RBI double in
the decisive sixth frame and added a two-run homer in the seventh
for the Jumbos.
Now 3-0, Tufts is enjoying its best start to a season since 2003.
They began their spring trip 3-0 that year as well before losing the
second game of a double-header at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian
College. Guilford dropped to 10-12 with the loss, their seventh
straight.
Junior Derek Miller (Whitman, MA) notched the win in his
first start of the young season with 7 2/3 innings of five-hit ball.
He walked three and fanned six before giving way to classmate Ed
Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) with two runners on in the eighth
inning. Bernstein got out of the jam by striking out Will Cornelius
and then fanned two in a scoreless ninth for his first save of 2010.
Kyle Wooden paced Guilford's offense with two of the Quakers' six
hits, including his team-leading sixth homer of the year, a solo
shot in the sixth inning. Guilford starter Zach Daw (0-2) looked
strong early and fanned a career-high nine in 5 2/3 innings before
Tufts came alive in the sixth inning. Will Henschel threw two
scoreless innings of relief for Guilford.
Among 13 hits for the Jumbos, junior shortstop David LeResche
(St. Louis, MO) continued his good work at the top of the order
with a three hits and a run scored. Senior DH Corey Pontes
(Milton, MA) and sophomore 2B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI)
joined Bankoff and Rose as Jumbos with two hits apiece.
Tufts plays a day-night double-header tomorrow. At 1:30 they play
against Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Then at 7 pm the
Jumbos take on Greensboro College in North Carolina. The Quakers
host Roanoke College Tuesday in a 3:30 pm Old Dominion Athletic
Conference contest on McBane Field.
