WATERVILLE, Me. -- The Tufts University baseball team clinched a spot in the 2009 NESCAC Tournament by winning two games at Colby College on Saturday afternoon, 8-4 and 10-8. Freshman Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL) picked up the save in each game for the Jumbos, giving him five for the year.

Tufts entered the weekend one game up on Bowdoin College for the second NESCAC East Division berth into the conference tournament, due to winning the series against the Polar Bears last weekend two games to one. Even though Bowdoin swept Bates this weekend, Tufts earned the bid by winning all three games at Colby. They came from behind for a 5-3 win over the Mules on Friday. Tufts has been an East qualifier in eight of the nine seasons that he conference tournament has been played.

Tufts moved over .500 to 16-15 overall and finished 7-5 in the NESCAC East. They will join East #1 seed Trinity College at the NESCAC Tournament May 8-10 at the site of the NESCAC West champion, which is still to be determined. Colby falls to 5-21 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

DeGoti entered the game in the fifth inning and closed out an 8-4 win in the opener and then came into the second game in the eighth inning and finished a 10-8 victory in the nightcap. Junior Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA) had four hits and three RBI in the first game for Tufts , while sophomores David LeResche (St. Louis, MO) and David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) both had two hits. Junior 2B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI) scored three runs, walked twice, and was hit by two pitches.

John LaMantia (Gates Mills, OH) had three hits for Colby in the first game. John Lerner (Canton, MA) and Taro Gold (Belmont, MA) both had two hits, one run, and one walk for the Mules.

Bankoff cracked a two-run homer and a double in the second game for the Jumbos. Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) and Kevin Casey (Milford, MA) both had three hits.

Mike Mastrocola (Southbury, CT) had a pair of doubles and two RBI for Colby in the second game. Craig Cooper doubled among his two hits and had two RBI, while Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, CT) had a two-run double.

Tufts takes Sunday off before traveling to Eastern Connecticut on Monday night. Colby is a Thomas on Wednesday.
