WATERVILLE, Me. -- The Tufts University baseball
team, down to its last out, scored three unearned runs in the top of
the ninth inning and then held on for a 5-3 victory over Colby
College in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
East Division baseball play Friday at Coombs Field.
Colby (5-19 overall, 1-9 NESCAC East) led 3-2
heading into the ninth and relief pitcher Wil Hartigan got the first
two outs of the inning. An error and then a hit batter put runners
on base for Jumbo freshman 2B Sam Sager (Cranston, RI), who
had an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3. Sophomore SS David
LeResche (St. Louis, MO) followed with a two-run single to give
the Jumbos their final two runs.
Tufts freshman Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL)
worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts for his third save, while fellow sophomore
Pat ODonnell (Worcester, MA) earned the win after entering
the game in the third inning. The Jumbos are battling Bowdoin for
the East's second berth into the upcoming conference tournament. The
Polar Bears (18-15, 5-5) were 5-3 winners at Bates today. Tufts
holds the tie-breaker after taking two out of three from Bowdoin
last weekend.
Tufts (14-15, 5-5) scored a lone run in the first
inning on an RBI single by Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) to
lead 1-0 at Colby.
Colby scored two runs in the third inning on a
two-run single by Ken Kaufman (Lexington, MA) that brought in Kyle
McKay (Bedford, NH) and John LaMantia (Gates Mills, OH).
The Mules went ahead 3-1 in the sixth inning when
Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, CT) was hit by a pitch and later scored on
a wild pitch. Tufts cut the margin to one run when junior catcher
Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) doubled and later scored on a single by
Sager.
Colby and Tufts will play a doubleheader Saturday
starting at noon at Coombs Field.
