Game Box Score

Alex Perry started the ninth inning with a single and later scored the tying run

MEDFORD -- The Tufts University baseball team scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning, including the winning run on a Bentley miscue, to take a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Falcons on Tuesday afternoon at Huskins Field.

The game was tied 2-2 heading into the ninth. Bentley sophomore 3B Ross Curley (Lexington, MA) singled to right and stole second with one out in the top of the inning. After junior 2B Jason Cusumano (Port Chester, NY) walked, junior catcher Mike DeCoste (Chelmsford, MA) singled home Curley for a 3-2 Falcons lead. With one out and runners on first and second, Tufts freshman Chris DeGoti (Miami, FL) pitched out of the jam with two ground ball outs.

Junior catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) led off the Tufts ninth with a single through the left-side hole. He was sacrificed to second, and then Bentley reliever Matt Sherman (Longmeadow, MA) walked the bases loaded. Tufts sophomore RF David Orlowitz (Wakefield, MA) nubbed the ball down the first-base line, but DeCoste could not retrieve it in time to make an out at the plate and Perry scored to tie it at 3-3. With the bases still loaded, Tufts junior 2B Caleb Sims (Burlington, MA) hit a ground ball to first base, but Bentley's Garrett Stenhouse (Warwick, RI) threw wide attempting a force-out at home and Jumbo junior Anthony Fucillo (Winthrop, MA) scored the winning run.

Bentley had taken 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and fifth. Freshman LF Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, MA) drew a bases-loaded walk in the first and Stenhouse hit his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot, with two outs in the fifth. Falcon starter Matt Boudrow (Dedham, MA) was not scored upon in the first four innings, with Tufts twice doubled off on line drive outs to the outfield.

The Jumbos got to Boudrow in the bottom of the fifth. Junior 1B Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) and junior LF Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA) led the inning with back-to-back singles, and a Bentley error on Bankoff's hit put runners at second and third. Freshman DH Matt Collins (Hopkinton, MA) followed with the third straight single of the inning to score Pontes. Tufts loaded the bases when a ground ball to second wasn't converted into an out by the Falcons, and then senior CF Dave Katzman (North Andover, MA) walked to score Bankoff and tie the game at 2-2.

Relievers Blaine McLean (Medford, MA) for Bentley and Tufts' Ed Bernstein (Foxborough, MA) and DeGoti got the game to the ninth without any more scoring, leading to the exciting finish.

Tufts had 11 hits in the game, with two each by Perry, Bankoff and sophomore SS David Leresche (St. Louis, MO). Bernstein pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings for the Jumbos. DeGoti earned the win, improving to 3-0, allowing three hits and a run in two innings. Sophomore Jack Dilday (Long Beach, CA) pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief early in the game.

No one had multiples in Bentley's seven-hit attack. Boudrow allowed seven hits and two runs in 5.1 innings, striking out four and walking one. McLean was solid in relief, giving up four hits and a run while striking out three in three good relief innings.

The Jumbos (10-14), who have won three straight and six out of the last seven in their series against the Falcons, play an important NESCAC East Division series against Bowdoin College at Huskins Field beginning on Friday (Apr. 17). Bentley (18-16) plays at Saint Anselm tomorrow.
