HARTFORD -- After pounding out 19 hits in an 11-5
win in the first game, the Trinity College Bantams used a six-hitter
with four strikeouts by sophomore righty Andrew Janiga (Ellington,
CT) and a walk-off homer by senior co-captain Sean Killeen
(Greenfield, MA) in the ninth inning for a 2-1 triumph in the
nightcap over the visiting Tufts University Jumbos in New England
Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball
action this afternoon. Trinity, ranked No. 4 in New
England and in the nation, improves to 15-3 overall and 6-0 in the
division and takes a sweep of the three-game series this weekend.
The Jumbos fall to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in the NESCAC East.
In the first game, Trinity took a 2-0 lead after one inning on a
two-run blast over the center field fence by junior 1B Kent Graham
(Longmeadow, MA). Tufts scored in the top of the fourth inning on
three walks and a fielder's choice by junior CF Caleb Sims
(Burlington, MA) to make it 2-1. However, Trinity erupted for
three runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth frames to lead 11-1.
Junior RF James Wood hit a two-run double in the fourth and senior
2B Ryan Piacentini scored twice and knocked in two runs during the
three three-run innings for the Bantams. The Jumbos
touched Bantam starter James Ramsey (Belmont, MA) for four runs in
the seventh inning, including a two-run double by senior 3B Kevin
Casey (Milford, MA) and a two-run home run by sophomore SS
David Leresche (St. Louis, MO). Trinity's freshman lefty
completed the five-hitter with seven K's for his fourth win of the
year. Trinity junior OF Jack Abbott (Longmeadow, MA)
went 4 for 4 with a double, while Piacentini was 3 for 4 with three
runs and two RBI, and Graham finished 2 for 4 with three RBI.
Leresche was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Sophomore Pat
O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) took the loss on the mound for the
Jumbos. In game two, Janiga outdueled Tufts senior
Mike Stefaniak (Needham, MA), who also allowed six hits and
fanned four in a complete-game effort. Janiga yielded just a single
Jumbo run in the fourth inning on doubles by freshman 2B Sam
Sager (Cranston, RI) and junior 1B Corey Pontes (Milton, MA).
Trinity answered in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff home run
over the left field fence by Piacentini. The Bantams put runners on
second and third immediately following the homer, on a single by
Killeen and a double by Graham, but Stefaniak pitched his way out of
trouble with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to end the inning.
Tufts had runners reach third with two outs in the sixth, seventh
and ninth innings, but could not get them in. Killeen led off the
bottom of the ninth with his walk-off shot. He finished 2 for 4 in
the game, while Sager and sophomore LF Chase Rose (Scottsdale,
AZ) were both 2 for 4 for Tufts offensively in game two.
The Jumbos travel to local rival Brandeis for a single game on
Tuesday (Apr. 7). Trinity is at Western Connecticut on Tuesday. #
