NORFOLK, Va. -- Host Virginia Wesleyan scored six times in the
bottom of the fifth inning, leading to a 14-5 victory over Tufts
University on Sunday afternoon.
The Marlins, who had 15 hits in the game, improved to 13-6
overall. Tufts was playing in the final game of its spring break
trip and heads back north with a 2-9 record.
VWC scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning as the
first three batters got on base. Senior 2B Phil Cadle, who scored
three runs in the game, walked and scored in the inning. Tufts
rallied to take the lead in the second, with junior LF Anthony
Fucillo (Winthrop, MA), freshman DH Matt Collins (Hopkinton,
MA) and sophomore CF Ian Golberg (Lake Forest, IL)
driving in the runs.
Tufts added to their lead with one in the fourth as Collins got
on base by fielder's choice and scored. Virginia Wesleyan recouped
one run with an RBI single by senior 1B C.J. Rhodes in the fourth.
The Jumbos had the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth, but did
not score. VWC followed with their six-run fifth inning, featuring a
key hit by junior DH Mike Marion. The Marlins held Tufts scoreless
over the final five innings, including a three-inning shutout relief
stint by senior Brett Horowitz. The offense for the hosts added four
runs in the final three innings for the 14-5 final.
Sophomore CF Myles Shipp was 2 for 3 with two runs for the
winners, while Marion had five RBI during his 2 for 4 day. Senior SS
Brandon Hathaway finished 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI. Collins
scored twice for Tufts.
The Jumbos open their home and NESCAC East Division slates at
Huskins Field on Friday (Mar. 27). The Marlins host Christopher
Newport on Monday.
