ASHLAND, VA Mike Wallace's three-run, eighth-inning blast
capped a late inning rally by Randolph-Macon and sent the Yellow
Jackets to a 9-8 victory over visiting Tufts University on Friday
afternoon in Ashland.
Trailing 8-4 after six and a half innings, the Jackets got their
comeback started in the home half of the seventh when Wallace
singled to open the inning and Jordan Walton followed with a
towering home run of his own, cutting the Jumbo lead to 8-6. In the
decisive eighth inning, Kevin Davis and Greg Meleski opened the
frame with back-to-back singles, setting the stage for Wallace's
fourth home run of the season that pulled R-MC in front for good at
9-8.
Tufts had got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run by
sophomore RF Ben Walkley (Trumbull, CT) in the second. They
scored five times in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Junior catcher
Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) doubled and scored, and sophomore SS
Dave Leresche (St. Louis, MO) hit a two-run double later in the
inning. R-MC scored three to pull within 6-4 in the third, including
a two-run double by Greg Mitro. The Jumbos plated solo runs in the
fourth and sixth innings. Senior LF Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA)
had the RBI in the fourth, and a single by Perry produced the
sixth-inning score.
After the Yellow Jackets came from behind to take the lead, Tufts
did not go away easy in the ninth. They got a leadoff walk from
Walkley, who was able to move to third after a pair of ground ball
outs. He would be stranded there, as R-MC reliever Brian Jordan was
able to get senior 2B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA) to fly out to
center field to end the ball game.
Jordan got his first win of the year after throwing two innings
of relief where he did not allow a hit and struck out three.
Sophomore Jack Dilday (Long Beach, CA) was saddled with the
loss after surrendering Wallace's game-winning home run.
Walton led the way for R-MC with four hits on the day and two
runs scored, while Mitro and Wallace had three and two hits,
respectively in the win. The Jumbos had 12 hits, with two each by
Leresche, Casey, Pontes, Bankoff and Perry. Bankoff scored twice and
drove home two runs.
Tufts (2-6) plays a double-header at Apprentice School on
Saturday. Randolph-Macon will be back in action on Saturday when it
travels to Lynchburg College for a key ODAC doubleheader starting at
1:00 pm.
