LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The #14 Lynchburg College baseball
team pounded out 23 hits as the Hornets knocked off the Jumbos of
Tufts University 14-7 Friday afternoon in non-conference action from
Fox Field. The game marked the 2009 season opener for Tufts.
Despite the mid-30 degree weather and constant rain,
both teams� bats were hot all afternoon. The two teams combined for
40 hits, including 17 by Tufts (0-1). Tufts scored in its first-at
bat as sophomore LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) led off
with a triple and scored on a single by senior 3B Kevin Casey
(Milford, MA).
Lynchburg (11-6) scored single runs in the first and
second innings, before plating three runs in the third frame and two
in the fourth stanza to lead 7-3.
The Hornets busted the game open in the bottom of
the sixth, as they posted six runs on six hits in the frame. The
inning was highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore 3B Jordan
Watkins (Freeland, MD) and a two-RBI double by David Gaines, Jr.
(Lynchburg, VA).
A two-run Tufts seventh featured RBI singles by
junior Anthony Fucillo (Winthrop, MA) and senior RF Eric
Catalanotti (Grafton, MA). Tufts added single runs in the
seventh and eighth, including a triple and run scored by junior 3B
Caleb Sims (Burlington, MA) in the eighth.
Every Lynchburg starter had at least one hit on the
day, as Gaines, Jr., Chris Colquhoun (Virginia Beach, VA) and Matt
Painter (Danville, VA) all collected four hits for the contest.
Watkins finished 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Junior Cameron
Grant (Lynchburg, VA) was 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs, while
Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA) and Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA) both
had a pair of hits for the hosts.
LC starter Jon Nichols (Stafford, VA) got the
victory, going six innings while scattering 10 hits and allowing
three earned runs. The Jumbos (0-1) were led by Golberg and his 3
for 6 effort, while Sims was 2 for 3 with two runs after entering in
the fifth inning. Junior LF Nate Bankoff (Lynnfield, MA) was
2 for 4, while Fucillo, Catalanotti, and David Leresche (St.
Louis, MO) all finished with a pair of hits.
Tufts sophomore starter Pat O�Donnell (Worcester,
MA) started and got the loss, going five innings, giving up 13
hits and surrendering three earned runs.
The Jumbos continue their spring trip with a game at
Randolph-Macon on Sunday. Lynchburg is back in action Sunday
afternoon at 1 pm as it travels to Lexington, VA for a league
double-header with the Generals of Washington & Lee University.
