Game Box Score

Senior Adam Telian had his best outing of the season in the NESCAC Tournament opener

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Senior pitcher Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) pitched a seven-hit shutout to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 1-0 win over the Williams College Ephs in first round action of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Baseball Championship Tournament this afternoon at Wesleyan University's Andrus Field. Tufts improves to 19-14 and advances to the winner's bracket game this afternoon at Trinity College, while the Ephs fall to 24-11 and will play Amherst College in the loser's bracket game this afternoon on Andrus Field.

Tufts jumped on top early when junior OF Dave Katzman (North Andover, MA) scored sophomore catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) in the second inning with a bases loaded walk. That gave Telian and the Jumbos all they would need to secure the victory. Ephs senior pitcher Matt Gustafson (Cupertino, CA) took the loss despite allowing no earned runs and just three hits in 8.1 innings. Telian collected three strikeouts in the pitchers duel. Neither pitcher allowed an extra base hit in the game.

Williams' best chance to score came in the eighth when junior 1B Zach Stone (Darien, CT) singled to lead off the inning. Junior 3B Barrett Allison (Amherst, MA) bunted Stone to second, giving the Ephs a man in scoring position with one out and a chance to tie the game. First-year OF Bryce Bennett (Jonesboro, AZ) pinch-ran for Stone, but was thrown out trying to steal after Perry made a perfect throw to get him at third. In the ninth, Eph senior OF Max Pinto (Palo Alton, CA) singled with one out, but Telian picked him off at first for the second time in the game.

Tournament host Trinity downed Amherst in the other first round game today at Trinity.
