NORTH DARTMOUTH -- Sophomore left fielder Tom LaDores infield
hit in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in the winning run as
the University of Massachusetts Dartmouths baseball team edged
visiting Tufts, 10-9, in a non-conference game at the UMass
Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore center fielder Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA) started the
Corsairs rally when he singled with one out in the eighth inning.
One out later, freshman designated hitter Chris Benevides (Fall
River, MA) singled, and both runners moved up on the throw in from
the outfield. LaDores hit drove in Macchi with the go-ahead run.
UMass Dartmouth took the early lead, scoring seven times in their
first two at-bats. Macchi doubled in a run in the first inning,
junior first baseman Casey Askeland (Dartmouth, MA) drove in another
with an infield grounder, and junior third baseman Dave McGuire
(Plainville, MA) singled in another. Askelands infield grounder and
a sacrifice fly by Benevides accounted for two more runs in the
second.
Tufts senior second baseman Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle
River, NJ) tripled home a run in the third, and the Jumbos took
the lead with seven runs in the fifth. Ragonese walked with the
bases loaded, sophomore first baseman Corey Pontes (Milton, MA)
singled in a run, and freshman designated hitter Chase Rose
(Scottsdale, AZ) and sophomore catcher Alex Perry (Danvers,
MA) each contributed two-run singles.
Askelands two-run single allowed the Corsairs to regain the lead
in the bottom of the sixth. Pontes RBI single in the top of the
eighth tied the game at 9-9 and set the stage for UMass Dartmouths
winning rally. Tufts loaded the bases in the ninth against Corsair
freshman right-hander Brian Pedrotti (Dalton, MA), but he induced
Ragonese to fly out to center field to end the game.
Freshman right-hander Kyle Merrill (Dennis, MA), the third of
four Corsair pitchers, earned the victory and improved to 1-0.
Freshman reliever Jack Dilday (Long Beach, CA) took the loss
for Tufts and dropped to 0-2, while Pedrotti earned his first save
of the season.
The Corsairs improved to 3-20 with the victory, while Tufts fell
to 13-9 with the defeat. The Jumbos will host Trinity (CT) Friday in
an important NESCAC East Division three-game set. UMass Dartmouth
will return to action when they host Johnson & Wales in a
non-conference game Wednesday afternoon.
