Game Box Score

Sophomore Corey Pontes drove home two of Tufts' four runs

BRUNSWICK, Me. -- The Bowdoin College baseball team rallied to score three runs in the seventh inning en route to a 6-4 win over Tufts in the Polar Bears' home-opener on Friday afternoon. Bowdoin improves to 11-8 (3-3 NESCAC East) with the win while Tufts drops to 11-8 (2-2).

Freshman Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) doubled to lead off the game for Tufts and came home later in the inning on an RBI groundout by Corey Pontes (Milton, MA). Tufts doubled their lead in the second frame when an RBI double by Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) plated Dave Leresche (St. Louis, MO), giving the visitors a 2-0 edge.

Bowdoin trimmed the lead to a single run in the bottom of the inning as a bases-loaded walk to Marc Dallaire brought home Matt Ruane. The hosts tied the game in the fourth when Jason Koperniak came home on a wild pitch, but Tufts starter Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) was able to escape a runner-on-third/no out situation in the inning to keep the game deadlocked.

Tufts rallied to score twice in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) and added another run on a double-play groundout by Pontes to re-take the lead 4-2 before Bowdoin bounced back in the seventh.

Marc Dallaire started the rally with a leadoff HBP and, one out later, moved to second on a wild pitch. Joe Berte walked and Kevin Zikaras doubled to bring home Dallaire. After Pat Duchette popped out, Jason Koperniak ripped a ball that got through into left field, bringing home both Berte and Zikaras to make it 5-4 Polar Bears. Reid Auger blasted a deep home run to left in the eighth to provide some insurance for Bowdoin.

Carter Butland (2-2) allowed four earned runs and scattered five hits and four walks to collect the win for Bowdoin. Pat Driscoll was outstanding, striking out six batters in two innings of relief to net his second save of the year. Matt Ruane led the Bowdoin bats with three hits.

Tufts' Telian (3-3) allowed three earned runs and eight hits in 6.2 innings before giving way to Tom Hill (Robbinsville, NJ). Goldberg scored twice and Pontes had two RBI's to pace the Jumbo offense.

The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader at Bowdoin on Saturday beginning at noon, weather permitting.
