WILLIAMSTOWN -- Averaging 11.5 runs per game
entering Sunday, and after twice scoring more than 20 runs in their
last three games, the Tufts baseball team showed it can pitch some
too, sweeping NESCAC West Division foe Williams College by identical
2-1 scores in a double-header on Sunday. Seniors Jason Protano
(Milford, MA) and Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA), and
freshman Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) did not give up an
earned run in 16 innings pitched.
Protano started the first game, scheduled for seven
innings, and cruised through the first four. Williams scored an
unearned run in the fifth on a single by sophomore SS Robin Allemand.
When Protano ran into some trouble in the sixth, Telian entered and
got two outs to end a Williams threat. Down 1-0 entering the sixth,
Tufts surged to a 2-1 lead against Williams junior starter Dan Benz
in the sixth. Sophomore 1B Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) and
junior 3B Ari David (Lincoln, MA) worked walks and both
scored on a double by sophomore catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA).
Telian surrendered a one-out double to freshman Pat Barren in the
bottom of the seventh, but recorded the last two outs for the save.
Protano allowed six hits in 5.2 innings and Telian
finished up with 1.2 innings and one hit. James DiCosmo went 3 for 4
for Williams. Senior RF Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ)
was 2 for 4 for Tufts.
In game two, O'Donnell pitched a nine-inning,
complete-game two-hitter, striking out seven and walking two while
raising his record to 3-0. The offense gave him a 2-0 lead in the
fifth with four hits. Freshman SS Dave Leresche (St. Louis, MO)
led off with a single and scored on a double by junior CF Dave
Katzman (North Andover, MA). A single by junior 3B Kevin
Casey (Milford, MA) brought home Katzman.
O'Donnell allowed an unearned run in the sixth after
Barrett Allison got on by an error to lead off the inning. He was
doubled home by Barren. However, O'Donnell stranded Barren at second
by striking out the last two batters of the inning. He would not
allow a hit the rest of the way.
Freshman LF Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL)
was 2 for 5 at the top of the Tufts line-up. Williams fell to 13-7
overall with the two losses.
Winners of five straight, Tufts (11-6) hosts
Brandeis on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
