HAMPTON, Va. -- The Tufts baseball team built its winning streak to four games with a double-header sweep at the Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon. The Jumbos won 14-7 and 10-0 in two seven-inning games and now have wins in five of their last six overall. They exploded for 12 runs in the middle three innings in game one and seven in the first two of game two. Tufts is 6-4 on their season-opening spring trip, which concludes on Sunday at Virginia Wesleyan.

Apprentice School opened the scoring in game one in the first inning as sophomore Jonathan Dehoux smashed his sixth home run of the season scoring James Denny for a 2-1 advantage. The Builders made it 4-2 in the third as Denny singled in Eric Polk and Dehoux doubled in Denny. That was when the bats for the Jumbos exploded. In the fifth they took the lead (6-4) scoring four times, with freshman LF Chase Rose (Scottsdale, AZ) knocking in a run with a single and later scoring. Tufts added eight more runs in the sixth. Senior 1B Steve Ragnoese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) homered to start the inning and tripled in three to add insurance later in the inning.

The Builders responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as J.D. Drewry doubled in Polk and Mike Nelson who had earlier singled. Drewry scored as Dehoux reached on a throwing error. Dehoux, Drewry and Polk had two hits apiece for the Builders. Dehoux drove in three, two coming on his home run in the first, and Drewry drove in a pair.

Ragonese, who had a five-hit game at Randolph-Macon on Friday, was 3 for 5 with four RBI and three runs scored in game 1. Sophomore DH Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) had a 3 for 4 game with three RBI and sophomore catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) finished 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs. Tufts had 17 hits in the game. Senior Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) worked six innings for the victory.

In the nightcap, the Jumbos kept smashing the ball scoring three runs in the first and four more in the second en route to the 10-0 victory. Back-to-bit hit batters brought home two runs in the first. Ragonese continued his hot hitting with a two-run single in the second. Meanwhile, freshman Pat O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) pitched six shutout innings, allowing six hits and a walk. Sophomore Tom Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) handled the seventh, recording two strike outs, as the Jumbos earned their first shutout since last season at Apprentice.

Freshman Ian Goldberg (Lake Forest, IL) was 2 for 5 with two runs and an RBI at the top of the Tufts order in game 2. Rose finished with two hits, scoring a run and driving home one. Dehoux and Polk had a pair of hits apiece in the second game for the Builders.

Apprentice School (14-12) will return to action on Monday facing Fulton-Montgomery College in a 1 pm doubleheader at War Memorial Stadium.
