Game Box Score MEDFORD -- Six Tufts University pitchers held Bentley College to
three hits as the Jumbo baseball team earned a 3-1 victory against
the Falcons at Huskins Field on Wednesday afternoon. Tufts senior
catcher Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) hit a solo home run
with one out in the sixth for the game-winning run.
Freshman Thomas Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) started for the
Jumbos and allowed just a walk in two innings. Bentley would score
its only run of the day against Tufts senior Carlos Lopez
(Brooklyn, NY) in the fourth. Sophomore LF Kevin Vona (Belmont,
MA) singled with one out and stole second. He then scored on a
double to the base of the right-field wall by senior 1B Tom Haugh
(Andover, MA) and the Falcons led 1-0.
Bentley would only get one more hit, a single with two outs in the
fifth by senior CF Bob Savoy (Norwell, MA). Tufts tied the score at
1-1 in the fifth when senior SS Brian Casey (Milford, MA)
doubled to left and scored on a two-out single to left by junior RF
Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ). Decembrele's blast
in the sixth, his third of the year, put the Jumbos up for good.
Sophomore Mike Stefaniak (Needham, MA) worked the fifth and
sixth innings for Tufts, allowing one hit and earning the victory.
He, Derek Rice (Braintree, MA), Adam Telian (Stoughton,
MA) and Casey combined to retire the last 13 Bentley batters.
Casey earned his fourth save. Tufts picked up its
third run after loading the bases in the eighth. Decembrele singled
and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. He finished 2 for 3 with
two runs scored, the only player in the game with two hits.
Bentley freshman Joe McKenna (Charlton, MA), making his first
appearance of the season, absorbed the loss after allowing
Decembrele's home run. Classmate Matt Boudrow (Dedham, MA) started
for the Falcons and allowed just one hit and no runs in three
innings. The teams used 10 pitchers combined. Tufts
(19-8) won for the fourth time in five games. Bentley (15-24) has
now lost two straight after winning four in a row.
