MEDFORD -- The Tufts University baseball team had 13 hits and got a fine start from freshman pitcher David Gibbs (Harrison, NY) to beat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs, 13-3, on Monday afternoon at Huskins Field.

The Jumbos improved to 18-8 overall and 9-2 at home. The Corsairs, who made eight errors in the game, fell to 6-19 with their fifth straight defeat.

The Jumbos trailed 1-0 early, but scored twice in the second, four times in the third and three more in the fourth to lead 9-1. Freshman DH Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) was on base in each of those three innings, scoring three times and driving home a run. Senior catcher Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) had two RBIs during the stretch for Tufts.

Meanwhile, Gibbs went six innings allowing four hits and no earned runs while striking out six. He departed with a 9-3 lead. UMass Dartmouth senior LF Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA) doubled and scored in the second. The Corsairs scored twice in the sixth, one on a single by freshman RF Joe Albano (Agawam, MA).

Tufts added four more in the eighth. Pontes and sophomore LF Eric Catalanotti (Grafton, MA) both had run-scoring singles in the inning. They were the offensive leaders of the day, with Pontes finishing 3 for 4 with four runs scored and two RBIs, and Catalanotti ending up 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run. Freshmen Jordan Goldberg (Westborough, MA) and Alex Perry (Danvers, MA) both pitched scoreless relief for Tufts.

Senior Patrick Costa (New Bedford, MA) was excellent in relief for UMD, pitching three innings and allowing just one hit and no runs.
