MEDFORD -- Tufts and Bowdoin split a NESCAC East baseball double-header on Saturday afternoon at Huskins Field. Tufts won the first game dramatically, 6-5. Bowdoin built a big early lead and cruised to a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

A back-and-forth first game was resolved by Tufts senior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA). With the game tied at 5-5, McDavitt led off the bottom of the ninth with a drive to the wall in left. As he attempted to leg out a triple, Bowdoin's throw to third base bounced into their dug-out and McDavitt went home with the winning run.

The Polar Bears scored three times in the top of the third, including RBI doubles by Kenneth Kozens (Falmouth, MA) and Chris McCann (Hopkinton, MA). The Jumbos scored four in the bottom of the inning, including back-to-back, run-scoring singles by Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) and Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA). Bowdoin then tied it at 4-4 with a lead-off home run in the fifth by Joe Berte (Marlborough, MA), and went ahead 5-4 with a bases-loaded, two-out walk to Jon Koperniak (Adams, MA) in the sixth.

Tufts reliever Brian Casey (Milford, MA) ended the Bowdoin threat in the sixth with a strike out. McDavitt then provided the clutch tying run for Tufts with a single in the sixth. Casey (3.1 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 4 strike outs) retired nine straight Polar Bears in the seventh through ninth innings. Bowdoin reliever Tyler Turgeon (Auburn, ME) was doing the same until McDavitt's dash around the bases to win it.

Bowdoin took any suspense out of game two early. A two-run single by Patrick Duchette (Wales, ME) and a two-run home run by Nick Lawler (Auburn, ME) gave the Polar Bears a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Berte's second home run of the day to lead off the third led to a three-run inning and a 7-0 Bowdoin lead. Duchette (3 for 4, 3 RBIs, 2 runs in the game) drove home one of two Bowdoin runs in the fourth and it was 9-1.

Meanwhile, starter Ryan Turgeon (Auburn, ME) worked comfortably with the lead and improved to 4-0. He allowed a run-scoring single to Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) in the third and McDavitt's solo home run in the fifth. Bowdoin's Berte and Koperniak both scored three times in game two. Freshman CF Joe Pace (Newburyport, MA) hit two RBI singles. Bowdoin is now 10-10 overall and 5-3 in the NESCAC East.

McDavitt and Pontes each had three hits in game two for the Jumbos (16-7, 5-1 NESCAC East).
