Game Box Score
MEDFORD -- Tufts took an important 8-3 victory over Bowdoin College
in the opening game of a three-game series between the NESCAC East
Division rivals on Friday afternoon at Huskins Field. The Jumbos got
another solid start from junior Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA)
and opportunistically scored eight runs on eight hits.
Telian and Bowdoin starter Joe Pace (Newburyport, MA) threw blanks
for the first three innings. Bowdoin got on top 1-0 when freshman RF
Marc Dallaire (Peabody, MA) reached by error and scored on a sac fly
by senior LF Jon Koperniak (Adams, MA). The Jumbos answered
immediately, knocking Pace out of the game in the fourth. They sent
10 men to the plate and scored four times. Before departing, Pace
walked four Jumbos in the inning and surrendered a two-run single to
sophomore 2B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA).
Bowdoin closed the gap to 4-3 with two in the fifth. Senior John
Lawrie (Walpole, MA) worked a lead-off walk and junior 1B Patrick
Duchette (Wales, ME) singled. The Polar Bears loaded the bases on a
Jumbo error after a Kenneth Kozens' (Falmouth, MA) bunt. Lawrie
scored on a walk to Chris McCann (Hopkinton, MA) and Duchette came
in on a passed ball.
A two-run single by freshman DH Corey Pontes (Milton, MA) in
the sixth and an RBI base hit by Casey in the seventh gave Tufts
some breathing room at 7-3. Junior Jason Protano (Milford, MA)
came on for Telian in the eighth and mowed down the Polar Bears six
straight. Pontes doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of
the eight.
Casey, Pontes and sophomore CF Dave Katzman (North Andover, MA)
had two hits apiece for the Jumbos. None of the three runs scored
against Telian were earned. Tufts improved to 14-6 overall and 4-0
in the NESCAC East.
Bowdoin got two hits from sophomore DH Joe Berte (Marlborough, MA).
Bowdoin, the NESCAC East champion a year ago, fell to 9-9 overall
and 4-2 in the league.
