MEDFORD -- An extraordinary sixth inning during which they scored
nine runs led the Tufts baseball team to a 9-2 victory over Albertus
Magnus College on Thursday afternoon at Huskins Field. Junior
Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) improved his record to 3-0 on the
mound, allowing one earned run in seven innings. He picked off four
Falcon base-runners in the first three innings.
The Jumbos were trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The first 11 men they sent to the plate reached base by either a hit
or a walk. Senior CF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) smashed a
three-run triple to deep center field to start the scoring, and he
finished it with a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Five Albertus
Magnus pitchers issued a total of eight walks in the inning. Four of
the Falcon pitchers in the frame did not record an out. Jumbo senior
SS Brian Casey (Milford, MA) also had a two-run single.
The Falcons were cruising along nicely with a 1-0 lead through five
innings. Starter Dan Doria (West Haven, CT) had kept the Jumbos off
the scoreboard, which included working out of a jam with Jumbos on
second and third and one out in the fifth. Albertus scored in the
top of the fourth when freshman 3B Matt Rondinone (East Hartford,
CT) took a walk with one out, moved to third on singles by Michael
Damiani (New Haven, CT) and J.R. Bagley (Middletown, CT), then
scored on a ground out by Stephen Carosella (Waterbury, CT).
Telian remained in the game after the one-hour long sixth inning,
and gave up an unearned run caused by his own error in the seventh.
Senior DH Ray Ricker (Torrington, CT) led off with a single and
moved to second when Telian's misplayed a ball tapped out in front
of the plate. A single by sophomore catcher Robert Boscarino
(Windsor Locks, CT) loaded the bases, and Rondinone was hit by a
pitch with two outs to score the run.
Tufts freshman Thomas Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) finished the
victory with two hitless innings of relief. Sophomore RF Eric
Catalanotti (Grafton, MA) was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI. The
win is the fifth straight up north for Tufts (12-4), who are
currently ranked #3 in New England.
Damiani and Ricker both finished 2 for 4 for the Falcons (4-5).
Doria ended up as the loser, allowing five hits and two runs with
three walks in five innings.
