Game Box Score

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- North Carolina Wesleyan College scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to get going on a 9-5 victory over Tufts on Thursday afternoon. The Jumbos dropped their third straight contest on their spring break trip and fell to 3-4 overall. The Battling Bishops improved to 19-10.

NCWC, the NCAA South Regional champions last season, got a two-run double from sophomore 3B Tyler Goarck to highlight the four-run second frame. Tufts got two back in the top of the third, courtesy of a single by senior shortstop Brian Casey (Milford, MA), and it was 4-2 through three innings.

The Bishops extended the margin to 7-2 with a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Doubles by Goarck and sophomore catcher Justin Batts sparked both innings. The Jumbos scored twice unearned in the sixth to close the margin to 7-4. Casey hit a one-out single and scored on a fielder's choice by senior LF Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA), while sophomore CF Eric Catalanotti (Grafton, MA) walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by junior DH Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ).

Again, NCWC answered with a pair of runs to make it 9-4. RBI singles came of the bats of Goarck and freshman DH Joe Creef. Casey continued his productive game for the Jumbos, getting hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth and scoring on a single by senior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA). However, that would be it for the Jumbos.

Sophomore Ben Moore went the distance for the Bishops, allowing six hits and two earned runs in his nine innings of work. Goark finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while sophomore 2B Wes Means went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI.

Junior Jason Protano (Milford, MA) took the loss for Tufts. Casey, at 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, was the only Jumbo with crooked numbers in production.
