Lawrence Game Box Score

Guilford Game Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Tufts baseball team improved its record to 2-1 with wins in two separate games on Monday. The Jumbos played Lawrence University out of Appleton, Wisconsin in the morning at Guilford College, winning 7-0. The Jumbos then played the host Quakers later in the afternoon and won 13-9.

Against Lawrence, the Jumbos got an outstanding performance on the mount from junior Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA). He went eight innings allowing just two hits and striking out eight with one walk. Only once did a Lawrence base-runner reach third base. He allowed singles in the third and fourth innings.

Tufts got him the only run he would need in the first when senior LF Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) singled and scored on a double by senior tri-captain Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA).

The Jumbos added a single run in the third on a run-scoring double by freshman 3B Caleb Sims (Burlington, MA) and three more in the fifth, including a two-run home run by junior Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) to lead 5-0. McDavitt had an RBI single in the seventh and finished the game 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Backstrom was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Against Guilford, the Jumbos had a four-run fifth inning with three consecutive doubles to help secure a 13-9 win. After the teams traded single runs in both the first and second innings, a two-run home run by senior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) put Tufts up 4-2 in the top of the third inning. Guilford scored three runs in the fourth -- two unearned -- to take a 6-5 lead. Freshman shortstop Drew Ward doubled and scored in the inning. However, in the fifth, Tufts got doubles from sophomore 3B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA), sophomore RF Eric Catalanotti (Grafton, MA) and freshman catcher Alex Perry (Danvers, MA). Those scored the four runs that put Tufts ahead 9-6, and it was the fifth straight inning in which Tufts scored.

The Jumbos added to the lead with a two-run single by senior shortstop Brian Casey (Milford, MA) in the seventh. Two more runs crossed in the eighth, including a lead-off single and run scored by McDavitt. Drew smacked a two-run double as part of a three-run ninth for Guilford, but the rally fell short when Brian Casey took the hill and got the final two outs.

McDavitt finished 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs. Kevin Casey also had four hits for the Jumbos and scored three runs. The Jumbos finished with 17 hits. Freshman Thomas Hill (Robbinsville, NJ) pitched 4.1 innings of hitless, scoreless relief to earn the win for Tufts.

Drew finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the Quakers. Myers had two hits and two RBIs.
