BABSON PARK -- Junior Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) snapped a 3-3 tie with a two-out grand slam in the fifth inning to lead the Tufts University Jumbos to a 7-3 win and a double header sweep of host Babson College in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon. Tufts, which took game one by a score of 4-2, improved to 22-12 on the year, while the Beavers finished the season with a mark of 19-18.

In game one, Tufts plated three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single by McDavitt and back-to-back RBI-doubles by freshman Brian McDonough (Hanover, MA) and junior Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA). The Beavers cut the deficit to 3-2 when freshman Jeff Wojnar (Bellaire, TX) hit run-scoring singles in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Jumbos tacked on an insurance run when McDonough drove in junior Brian Casey (Milford, MA) with a fielder's choice in the seventh for the 4-2 final.

Senior Zak Smotherman (Westborough, MA) started and picked up the win (5-1) for Tufts, allowing one run while striking out four in four innings of work. Junior Carlos Lopez (Brooklyn, NY) allowed one run in two innings of relief, and sophomore Jason Protano (Milford, MA) tossed a scoreless seventh to earn his third save of the season. Senior Sam Schaffer (Glastonbury, CT) started and took the loss (0-1) for the Beavers, allowing three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Sophomore Sam Whelan (Milton, MA) went the final 3 2/3 for Babson, giving up one run and fanning four.

Tufts once again jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two, as McDonough knocked in two with a single to left-center and Backstrom plated another with a single to right. Babson would get one run back on an RBI-double by senior tri-captain Ted Dziuba (Wayne, NJ) in the bottom of the inning and then tie the game in the second, as junior Billy Schmitt (Fairview, NJ) hit an RBI-single to right and Dziuba followed with a sacrifice fly to center.

The game remained tied until the top of the fifth, when an error, a single, and an intentional walk loaded the bases with two outs for Tufts. McDavitt then put the Jumbos in front to stay when he blasted a grand slam over the wall in right-center. It was the third home run of the season for the junior first baseman.

Sophomore Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win for Tufts, as he improved to 5-2 on the year. Sophomore Jon Igoe (Lexington, MA) suffered the loss for Babson dropping his season record to 4-3. The second-year right-hander allowed seven runs - three earned - on seven hits in five innings. Senior Greg Chertok (New City, NY) finished with five hits in the doubleheader for Tufts, while Schmitt recorded four hits for Babson.
