LEWISTON, Me. -- The Tufts University baseball team pounded out 32 hits while defeating Bates College in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday, completing a decisive three-game weekend sweep in NESCAC East Division action with victories of 13-3 and 10-1.

A day after beating the Bobcats (4-6) 12-3, the Jumbos (11-4) tallied 19 hits in the first game, plating five runs in the first inning off of Bates junior starter Griffin Finan (Bethesda, MD). Bates came up with a run in the second and two more in the third to close the deficit to 6-3, but Tufts tacked on two more in the fourth and five runs in the sixth off of freshman reliever Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, MA) to pull away.

Tufts junior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA), who was 8 for 13 in the three games, went 3 for 5 in the first game with an RBI and a pair of runs, while junior DH Nick Curato (Cumberland, ME) went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Freshman RF Brian McDonough (Hanover, MA) was 2 for 4 with two steals and drove in three runs while scoring two.

Sophomore left-hander Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) earned the win for Tufts with 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and no walks while striking out five. Junior Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) was the starter, lasting 2 1/3 innings.

Finan (1-1) got the loss for Bates. Murphy-Romboletti threw five innings of relief, allowing seven runs, three earned. Freshman Ben Thayer (Gorham, ME) threw a shutout inning of mop-up duty. Sophomore outfielder Casey McCormack (Keene, NH) went 3 for 4 for Bates and scored a run. Classmate Alex Egelson (Fairfield, CT) was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

In the second game, Tufts again pounced on Bates pitching early on, with three runs in the first and six more in the third, all charged to freshman starter Lawrence Hinkle (Arlington, VA), with six of the nine earned. In Tufts' six-run third, the first four batters all singled, with Curato's (2 for 4, four RBIs) bases-loaded hit scoring two. The Jumbos had six of their total 13 hits in the inning and took advantage of two Bates errors.

Tufts junior LF Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) went 4 for 4 in the game, with two runs and an RBI. Senior left-handed starter Zak Smotherman (Westborough, MA) earned the win for Tufts, allowing one run over seven innings on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven Bobcats.

Bates sophomore Erik Hood (Berlin, NH) was 3 for 3 in the game with an RBI. Sophomore SS Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) went 2 for 4. Bates relievers Dan Cook (Sudbury, MA) and Ralph Vitti (Winchester, MA) proved effective in the game. Cook allowed one run and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings, while Vitti allowed one hit over two shutout innings.

Tufts, winners of four in a row now, travel to Division II Bentley on Wednesday. Bates hosts Husson College Tuesday.
