Game Box Score

BUZZARDS BAY -- The Tufts University baseball team banged out 25 hits on its way to a 20-0 win over Mass Maritime on Wednesday afternoon. The win came in the team's opening game of its northern schedule after an 11-game spring trip.

The Tufts (8-4) attack was paced by Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA) who was 4 for 5, scored three runs, drove in four and hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right in the third. Junior LF Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) also enjoyed a big game for the Jumbos, finishing 3 for 3 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Sophomore DH Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) was 3 for 4 with three runs and an RBI and freshman 3B Kevin Casey (Milford, NH) had a 2 for 6 day with three RBIs and a run. Eight Jumbos in total had at least two hits.

Tufts sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning as the Jumbos scored five runs and set the tone early for what would be a long afternoon for the Buccaneers. The inning included a two-run single by junior catcher Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA). The Jumbos then plated nine runs in the fourth, with a two-run triple by O'Leary and a two run double by Casey providing the most thump.

Maritime, 5-3, managed six hits off of six different hurlers for the Jumbos. Junior Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) started, went three innings allowing three hits and no runs, and earned the decision. Bob Weber (Norwell, MA) had two hits for the Bucs.

Tufts opens its NESCAC East Division season this weekend at Bates with a single game on Friday afternoon and a double-heder on Saturday. Maritime is off until Saturday when it will begin MASCAC play with a doubleheader at Westfield State begining at noon.
