NORFOLK, Va. -- Host Virginia Wesleyan College and Tufts
University split a double-header on Sunday, with the Jumbos winning
the opener 7-1 and VWC taking the nightcap, 8-3. Tufts finished its
spring break trip with the games, compiling a 7-4 record. The
Marlins are now 10-15.
Tufts used a six-run fifth inning in the first game to pull away.
They had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a lead-off home
run by freshman Brian McDonough (Hanover, MA). He was also in
the middle of the fifth-inning rally, hitting a two-run double. That
was followed by a two-run single from junior LF Kyle Backstrom
(Worcester, MA). Junior CF Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA)
and junior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) also had RBIs in
the inning. Each of those Jumbos finished with two hits as Tufts
banged out 10 overall.
Junior Ben Simon (Providence, RI) limited Virginia
Wesleyan to just four hits in the game. He did not allow and earned
run and struck out five. The Marlins scored their lone run in the
bottom of the sixth after Brent Vuyovich led off with a triple. Dan
Sellers was 2 for 2 for the Marlins.
Tufts went out 2-0 in the second of the two seven-inning games.
McDavitt plated both with a two-run single. However, Matt Hudgins
belted a three-run triple in the bottom of the first to get VWC
going. Another triple by Brandon Hathaway led to a run in the second
and a double by Ricky Allred sparked a two-run third.
Jumbo senior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) doubled home a
run in the fourth to slice the Marlin lead to 6-3. Yet another
triple, by Allred, was part of a two-run fifth that made it 8-3.
Allred also picked up the pitching win, allowing three hits and two
runs in 3.1 innings. He was relieved by Zach Baker, who got the save
with 3.2 innings.
Chertok finished 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI to lead Tufts. The
Marlins recorded 10 hits, led by Allred (2 for 3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs)
and Hathaway (2 for 3, run).
