Game Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Greensboro College Pride began the first game of a four-game weekend set with a 13-6 victory over visiting Tufts University at War Memorial Stadium. The loss stopped a four-game winning streak by the Jumbos, who fell to 4-3 overall on their spring trip.

With Tufts leading 4-1 entering the home half of the third, GC sent 13 players to the plate, scoring nine runs off five hits. Pat Burgess doubled to center for the first Pride hit of the inning, scoring on a hard Jess Maloney single. With the bases loaded, and junior Brian Casey (Milford, MA) on the mound for the Jumbos, Anthony Corona doubled down the left field line to score Maloney and teammate Taylor Kennedy for the 4-4 tie. Two batters later, Justice lifted a double to right field, scoring Joshua Austine and Corona. In his second plate appearance of the inning, Burgess flied out to center field, scoring Buddy Allen. The final runs of the inning came on a double down the left field line by Maloney, plating Jeff Gregory and Justice for the 10-4 Pride lead.

Freshman hurler Greg Allen (3-1) completed five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, and striking out two Jumbo batters. Brent Justice led the way for all GC hitters with an afternoon that included hitting 4 of 5 from the plate, driving in two RBIs, scoring four runs, and stealing three bases. Teammates Jess Maloney (2 for 5, 3 RBIs, 2B) and Anthony Corona (2 for 5, 2 RBIs), also had solid hitting performances for GC.

Trailing 1-0 early, the Jumbos answered with a three-run second, highlighted by a home run to right center field by Brian McDonough (Hanover, MA). With two outs, a triple by Ben Chang (Chicago, IL) and a run scoring double by Patrick Kennedy (Hurst, TX) kept the inning alive. Greg Chertok (New City, NY) singled to right field, scoring Kennedy from second base, to close out the inning and give Tufts a 3-1 lead.

In the third inning, Jumbo Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) doubled to center field for the first hit of the inning. After Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) was hit by a pitch, McDonough drove in the fourth Tufts run on a single to right field, scoring McDavitt.

GC added two runs in the fifth, taking advantage of a leadoff single to right field by Justice. Justice moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gregory, only to score on a single by Burgess. With Kennedy at the plate and Burgess in scoring position, a single over the head of the second baseman gave The Pride a 12-4 advantage.

The Pride added one run in the seventh, assuming a 13-4 lead, when Brent Justice's single past the shortstop resulted in an unearned run as he came home from second on an error.

In the ninth, McDonough lifted his second home run of the afternoon over the right field wall for Tufts, for the 13-6 final. He finished the game 3 for 4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. McDavitt was 2 for 4 with two runs and freshman 2B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA) had a 3 for 4 day.
