Game Box Score

ROCKY MOUNT, NC -- The North Carolina Wesleyan baseball squad had its six game win streak snapped on Thursday, falling to Tufts University by a 3-2 score at Bauer Field. Tufts junior hurler Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) threw a complete game gem in helping his squad move to 4-2 on the season. The Bishops, who had won nine of ten entering Thursday's game, are now 15-8 overall.

The Bishops got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Second baseman Ryan Snyder reached on a throwing error by Tufts third baseman Patrick Kennedy (Hurst, TX). He advanced to third on a single by Mark Wooten and later scored on a sac-fly RBI by Kenny Flythe.

NCWC hurler Hunter Smith held Tufts in check until the top of the seventh when the Jumbos broke through with three runs on three hits. Senior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY), junior 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA), and junior LF Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) each collected RBIs in the frame.

It would be all the offense Tufts would need as Rice did the rest on the mound. The junior hurler scattered eight hits and gave up the two runs in a complete game effort. He walked none and struck out three.

Smith took the loss for Wesleyan after giving up three runs, all earned, on six hits. He also walked five and struck out four. Josh Richardson and Cale Strickland combined to throw the final two scoreless innings for NCWC.

Backstrom and junior CF Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA) each had two hits for Tufts, while Rob Johnson led the Bishop offense with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.

The Jumbos make-up Tuesday's rain-out at Greensboro on Friday starting at 3:00. Wesleyan will continue its five-game homestand on Friday when the Bishops host Endicott College at 2:00 p.m.
