Game Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. -- Senior Dan Mullins went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in to lead the host Randolph-Macon College Yellow Jackets to a 6-4 victory over the Tufts Jumbos on Sunday afternoon.

Mullins hit a two-run single in the third as the hosts took a 3-0 lead against Tufts starter Derek Rice (Braintree, MA). Tufts got a run back in the fifth after junior RF John Rothermel (Knoxville, TN) hit a one-out double. He scored on a single by freshman 3B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA).

Four of the first five RMC batters in the fifth inning had base hits, leading to three runs scored and a 6-1 lead. Freshman 2B Greg Meleski and junior DH Brian Rogers had RBI singles.

Tufts added a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to narrow the gap to 6-4. Junior 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA) singled to lead off the sixth and scored on a two-out single by sophomore DH Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ). A lead-off single by Kevin Casey, followed by a walk to senior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) ignited the two-run seventh, with both players scoring on a fielder's choice by freshman pinch hitter Aaron Sommer (Philadelphia, PA).

Tufts had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the eighth, but could not bring them across. Freshman Dillon Sheads worked a scoreless ninth to get the save for the Yellow Jackets.

Rice took the loss for Tufts, which got two innings of scoreless relief from junior Carlos Lopez (Brooklyn, NY). Kevin Casey finished 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI, while brother Brian Casey and junior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) each had two hits.

RMC's Devin O'Meara went five innings for the win, allowing four hits and a run. Meleski (2 for 4, run, rbi) and freshman SS Bruno Gora (2 for 4, run) joined Mullins as hitting heroes for the Yellow Jackets. Rusty Linville drove in two runs with a sac fly and a ground out.

Tufts, 0-2 on its trip thus far, looks for its first win with two games tomorrow. They will play Maryville College from Tennessee at Guilford starting at 10 am. Then the Jumbos will play Guilford at 2:30.
