ASHLAND, Va. -- Senior Dan Mullins went 3 for 5 with two runs
scored and two runs batted in to lead the host Randolph-Macon
College Yellow Jackets to a 6-4 victory over the Tufts Jumbos on
Sunday afternoon.
Mullins hit a two-run single in the third as the hosts took a 3-0
lead against Tufts starter Derek Rice (Braintree, MA). Tufts
got a run back in the fifth after junior RF John Rothermel
(Knoxville, TN) hit a one-out double. He scored on a single by
freshman 3B Kevin Casey (Milford, MA).
Four of the first five RMC batters in the fifth inning had base
hits, leading to three runs scored and a 6-1 lead. Freshman 2B Greg
Meleski and junior DH Brian Rogers had RBI singles.
Tufts added a single run in the sixth and two more in the seventh
to narrow the gap to 6-4. Junior 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA)
singled to lead off the sixth and scored on a two-out single by
sophomore DH Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ). A
lead-off single by Kevin Casey, followed by a walk to senior SS
Greg Chertok (New City, NY) ignited the two-run seventh, with
both players scoring on a fielder's choice by freshman pinch hitter
Aaron Sommer (Philadelphia, PA).
Tufts had the tying runs in scoring position with two outs in the
eighth, but could not bring them across. Freshman Dillon Sheads
worked a scoreless ninth to get the save for the Yellow Jackets.
Rice took the loss for Tufts, which got two innings of scoreless
relief from junior Carlos Lopez (Brooklyn, NY). Kevin Casey
finished 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI, while brother Brian Casey
and junior 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) each had two hits.
RMC's Devin O'Meara went five innings for the win, allowing four
hits and a run. Meleski (2 for 4, run, rbi) and freshman SS Bruno
Gora (2 for 4, run) joined Mullins as hitting heroes for the Yellow
Jackets. Rusty Linville drove in two runs with a sac fly and a
ground out.
Tufts, 0-2 on its trip thus far, looks for its first win with two
games tomorrow. They will play Maryville College from Tennessee at
Guilford starting at 10 am. Then the Jumbos will play Guilford at
2:30.
