Game Box Score

LYNCHBURG, VA – Led by a strong pitching performance by senior John Hines (Smithfield, VA), the Lynchburg College baseball team defeated Tufts University 10-2 Friday afternoon in a non-conference battle from Fox Field.

Tufts led 2-0 going into bottom half of the fourth inning. Sophomore DH Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) singled home junior LF Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) in the first. Junior CF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) led off the third with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY).

Eight Lynchburg runs in the bottom of the fourth frame proved to be the deciding factor. Eric O'Brien (Roanoke, VA) doubled in two runs during the inning, and Josh Walker (Manassas, VA) had a three RBI bases-clearing triple for LC. Three of the runs were unearned against Jumbo starter Ben Simon (Providence, RI).

Hines tossed seven innings for the Hornets, allowing two runs on seven hits, fanning eight Jumbo hitters. Brandon Weaver (Chesapeake, VA) finished on the hill, going two innings and allowing no hits or runs. Lucas Jones (Lynchburg, VA) was 2-4 with two runs scored for LC, who improved their home record to 8-2 with the win.

Junior 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA) was 2 for 4 for the Jumbos (0-1). Senior Erik Johanson (Wynnewood, PA) and sophomore Jason Protano (Milford, MA) both pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Tufts.

Tufts continues its spring break trip with a game at Randolph-Macon on Sunday at 1:30. Lynchburg (11-5) plays on the road for only the second time this month Saturday, traveling to Emory, VA for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) twinbill with the Wasps of Emory & Henry College. First pitch set for noon.
