Game 2 Box Score

MEDFORD – Wesleyan University senior pitcher Will Gordon (Durham, NC) threw a three-hitter in game one, and Tufts University scored 10 runs in the first inning of game two, as the Cardinals and Jumbos split a baseball double-header on Sunday at Huskins Field. Wesleyan won the first, 3-1, and Tufts took the second, 17-0. The Cardinals are now 3-15 and Tufts is 11-6.

Gordon walked six in the first game, but was able to work out of some jams. The Jumbos could only score in the second when sophomore 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA) and junior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) executed a double steal to tie the game at 1-1. Cardinals senior catcher Mac Clonan (Greenwich, CT) provided the game-winning hit with a two-run single in the fifth inning.

Junior CF Jeff Maier (Old Tappan, NJ), senior SS Jason Vitko (Shelton, CT) and sophomore 2B Chris Waelsch (Melrose, MA) each had two hits out of Wesleyan's 10 total in the first game. Junior RF Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA) had two of Tufts' three hits in the game.

In the second game, five Tufts hits and three Wesleyan errors led to 10 first-inning runs as the Jumbos sent 14 batters to the plate. O'Leary had a bases-clearing double and sophomore 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) hit a two-run double to highlight the inning. O'Leary added a two-run single in the second and finished the game 2 for 4 with five runs batted in. He was 4 for 7 in the double header. The Jumbos led 16-0 after four innings and both squads substituted heavily.

Jumbo junior Zak Smotherman (Westborough, MA) didn't even need all the run support, as he pitched six scoreless innings. He allowed four hits and no walks while striking out three for the victory. Freshman DH Steve Ragonese (Upper Saddle River, NJ) and sophomore LF John Rothermel (Knoxville, TN) both scored three runs for Tufts, while McDavitt finished 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore 3B Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) and Casey both had two hits and scored two runs for Tufts.
