LAURINBURG, N.C. -- Sophomore second baseman Josh Craig extended his hitting streak to nine games on Friday helping the St. Andrews baseball team win its eighth straight contest, a 3-1 victory over visiting Tufts University (Mass.) at Clark Field. The Knights improved to 20-13 while the Jumbos fell to 3-4.
St.
Andrews jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first after junior Anthony Mehling
scored from first base on a throwing error. Junior Will Clark made it 2-0 after
leading off the fourth with a single. Clark advanced to third on a single by
Craig and scored during a pickoff rundown at first.
Tufts scored its only run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1 on a double down the left field line by Jeff Volinski (Andover, MA) that plated Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA), who had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second.
The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth. Senior shortstop Everett Kelly led off with a single and advanced to second on a balk. Clark drove in Kelly with a single to right.
Freshman
right hander Jeff Shelton held the Jumbos to one run on six hits in over six
innings of work and improved to 3-0. Kelly earned his first save after replacing
Shelton in the eighth and retiring six of seven batters. Junior Zak
Smotherman (Westborough, MA) took the loss after giving up three runs on
seven hits while striking out five.
Clark and Kelly led St. Andrews with three and two hits, respectively. Craig has gone 15-for-31 (.484) in his nine-game hitting streak with 10 runs, eight RBI and five doubles. Sophomore SS Brian Casey (Milford, MA) had the lone multiple hit game for Tufts, finishing 2 for 4.
