ASHLAND, Va. -- The Tufts University Baseball team posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time in almost two years when then took a 3-0 victory at Randoph-Macon College on Sunday. Sophomore transfer Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) pitched seven innings allowing four hits and striking out eight for the victory.
Paired with a 5-0 win at Lynchburg on Friday, the Jumbos won two straight by shutout for the first time since sweeping Bates in a double-header 8-0 and 5-0 on March 29, 2003. Tufts is off to a 2-0 start on their spring trip. Randolph-Macon dropped to 6-9 overall.
The Jumbos scored their three runs early of RMC starter Chris Murray. They plated a pair in the top of the first following a lead-off double by junior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY). It looked as though he might get stranded, but sophomore 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) provided a two-out triple to score the run, and then McDavitt scored on a passed ball.
In the third inning, back-to-back doubles by junior RF Matt Clement (Norwood, MA) and sophomore 3B Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) scored the third and final Tufts run.
Only two RMC runners reached third base against Tufts pitching. Junior Erik Johanson (Wynnewood, PA) and sophomore Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) both pitched an inning for hitless relief for the Jumbos. Narva earned his first save of the season.
McDavitt finished 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI to lead Tufts. Senior C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) had three hits for the second day in a row, and senior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) also two hits.
