ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The Tufts Baseball team, which had shut out three of its first five opponents on their spring trip, was shutout on Thursday at North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-0. The loss evened the Jumbo record at 3-3, while the hosts improved to 15-11.
Three Bishops pitchers combined to hold the Jumbos to six hits overall. No Tufts base runners reached second until the ninth inning. Meanwhile, North Carolina Wesleyan scored two runs apiece in the first, second and fifth innings. Sophomore Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) started for the Jumbos and gave up nine hits and six runs in five innings.
Mark Wooten got the Bishops going with a two-run home run in the first. Ryan Snyder then led off the second with a solo shot. Brian Massey extended the lead to 6-0 with a two-run single in the fifth.
NCWC starter Kyle Robertson held Tufts to four hits in seven innings of work, all singles in the first, second, fifth and seventh innings. Two were erased by double plays. In the ninth, sophomore 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) reached second after being hit by a pitch, but that was as close as Tufts would get to scoring.
The Jumbos did get solid relief work, as freshman Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA), junior Erik Johanson (Wynnewood, PA) and sophomore Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) all worked a scoreless inning.
