MEDFORD – Senior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and a run-scoring triple in the third to help send the Tufts Baseball team on its way to a 15-2 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the Jumbos' home opener on Wednesday afternoon at Huskins Field.
Hickey was just one of several Jumbos who had big days at the plate. He finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and four runs batted in as Tufts unleashed a 19-hit attack on the Buccaneers. Sophomore 3B Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) was 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, sophomore CF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) went 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs, and senior LF Jeff Volinski (Andover, MA) posted a 3 for 5 day with two runs scored as Tufts broke out of a scoring slump that had seen them score just 11 total runs in their previous six games.
The Tufts lead was 8-0 before the Buccaneers got on the scoreboard by way of a two-run home run from freshman 3B Robert Weber (Norwell, MA) in the fifth inning. That was the biggest of eight MMA hits in the game. Sophomore SS Jacob Grabell (Milford, CT) led the Bucs with a 3 for 4 effort.
Tufts trotted out seven pitchers, with sophomore transfer Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) starting and collecting the win after three scoreless innings allowing no hits and two walks while striking out two. Freshman Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) hurled two scoreless innings for the Jumbos, striking out four.
Mass Maritime's Ryan Kurth (Chilmark, MA) suffered the loss on the mound, giving up eight hits and seven runs in three innings.
Tufts used 21 players overall in the game, while the Buccaneers played 20.
