GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Chad Boone went 3 for 4 with a home run and four runs batted in to lead Guilford College over Tufts, 8-5, in college baseball action on Monday afternoon. The loss is the first of the young season for the Jumbos (2-1), while the Quakers improved to 12-10.

Tufts junior starter Zak Smotherman (Westborough, MA) started with three scoreless innings, extending the Jumbos shutout streak to 21 innings starting the season. However, Boone's three-run home run spurred a four-run fourth that put Guilford up 4-0.

The Jumbos battled back to tie the game with a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh against Guilford starter Dave Sheffer. The Jumbos manufactured the run in the sixth with help from the Quakers. Sophomore 3B Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) reached on a fielder's choice and after advancing on a passed ball, he scored on a ground ball by senior DH Greg Hickey (Medway, MA). Sophomore LF John Rothermel (Knoxville, TN) sparked the sixth by leading off with a double. An RBI single by junior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) got the three-run rally going.

Rob Bittner's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke the tie. Jeff Arzonico and Boone followed with RBI singles later in the inning.

Sophomore 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) had a four-hit game for the Jumbos. Backstrom knocked in two runs and scored another. Carlos Lopez (Brooklyn, NY) and Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) pitched scoreless innings in relief.

Tufts continues its spring trip on Tuesday with a game at Methodist. First pitch is 3:00.
