GREENSBORO— The Greensboro College baseball team earned a 15-1 victory in a
weather shortened game over visiting Tufts University at War Memorial Stadium on
Wednesday.
The Pride (17-10) had four batters in the lineup with at-least two hits, and all but two starters connected for at least one hit in the contest. Larry Lockhart led all batters with a 3 for 4, which included a double, 3 RBIs, and two runs scored. Teammate Jesse Sutton was 1 for 3 from the plate, 3 RBIs, and a home run. Kevin Mong remained second on the team in RBIs (26), driving in four additional RBIs while hitting 2 for 3 from the plate. Pride starting pitcher Kevin Showe (3-0), earned the victory by completing five complete innings, surrendering two runs, one earned run, strking out six Jumbo batters, and walking three.
For the third consecutive game, GC got at least one run via the long ball, this time it came in the first inning with a solo shot to right centerfield off the bat of Sutton. Chad Clark led off the second inning for GC with a double that reached the centerfield wall, and two batters later were brought home on a Jeff Gregory double that hit off the left field wall. A sacrifice bunt by Henry Allen, put runners at second and third, with Jeremy Morrison at the plate. Morrison's single past Tufts second baseman Brian Casey (Milford, MA) took an errant bounce on the lip of the infield, scoring Brandon Stanford and Gregory. Advancing to second on a balk, Morrison scored on then ensuing play when Jumbo pitcher Chris Gingle (Swampscott, MA) was unable to field the ball cleanly, giving GC a 5-0 lead. The Pride's final run of the inning came off the bat of Kevin Mong, when single to left scored Jesse Sutton from second.
Five additional runs crossed the plate giving GC a 11-0 lead after three complete innings. The inning began with Chad Alligood doubling to center field, after a dropped foul ball by Tufts catcher Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) prolonged the at-bat. Alligood would score the unearned run, on a Jesse Sutton walk. Following the Sutton walk, Lockhart doubled to center field, scoring Morrison and Allen. Mong hit a towering double off the center field wall, scoring Lockhart and Sutton for the final runs of the third.
The Jumbos got on the scoreboard in the home half of the fourth inning, when Kenny singled to right field scoring Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA), who reached base by being hit on the pitch to lead off the inning.
The Pride added four runs on four hits in the home half of the fifth inning, beginning the hit parade with a Jeremy Morrison single to left field. Morrison moved to second on an error by Casey, allowing Sutton to reach base. Lockhart brought Morrison home on a single to left, and a GC 12-1 lead. Mong then drove the ball to center field, scoring Sutton, and the second unearned run of the inning. The next batter, Chad Clark, singled to left field scoring Lockhart while giving The Pride a 14-1 lead. The final run of the game came on a Alligood double to left field, bringing home Clark for the 15-1 victory.
