MEDFORD – The Tufts Baseball team came back from a 7-1 deficit to win the second game 9-7 and sweep a key double-header against Bowdoin College in NESCAC East Division play on Saturday afternoon at Huskins Field.

With the victories, and including a 10-2 win in the series opener on Friday afternoon, Tufts (15-6 overall) improved to 5-0 in the division to keep a hold on first place. Bowdoin dropped to 3-6 in NESCAC and 12-9 overall.

The Jumbos trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth in game two. They scored single runs in the next two innings and tied the score at 7-7 with four in the sixth. A two-run single by sophomore 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) plated the tying runs. In the seventh, Tufts went ahead 8-7 by loading the bases and getting a sacrifice fly from sophomore 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA).

Freshman Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA) pitched four innings of scoreless relief while the Jumbos made their comeback to earn his first career victory. During the comeback, senior C Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) hit a solo home run in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth. He finished 3 for 5 with the two RBIs, as did McDavitt. Sophomore 3B Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA) also had three hits as the Jumbos pounded out 17 overall in the game.

Bowdoin had put up crooked numbers in the second through fourth innings to lead 7-1. Junior RF Ricky Leclerc (Manchester, NH) scored twice and drove home a run with a double during the stretch, and junior CF Jared Lemieux (Readfield, ME) tripled home two runs in the fourth. He finished the game 3 for 4, while Leclerc was 2 for 4 and junior LF Ben Yormak (Komoka, ONT) was 2 for 3.

In game one, the Jumbos took a 6-0 lead after three innings with plenty of help from Bowdoin. Tufts scored two in the first when a double-play ball was misplayed allowing two runs to score. In a four-run third for Tufts, two Jumbos crossed the plate on wild pitches.

The Polar Bears got back into the game with single runs in three straight innings to make it 6-3. In the sixth, doubles by sophomore 3B Jon Koperniak (Adams, MA) and pinch hitter Ken Kozens (Falmouth, MA) brought in a run and helped load the bases. With the potential tying run on first base, Tufts closer Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) ended the threat by getting a tapper out in front of the plate for the third out.

Tufts added four runs in the sixth when junior RF Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA) and Hickey both hit two-run doubles. Backstrom and O'Leary both scored three runs in the game for Tufts. Senior C Bob Kenny (Milford, MA) was the only Jumbo with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 3. Narva earned the save, and would do so again in the nightcap, bringing his season total to five. Sophomore Derek Rice (Braintree, MA) got the win in the first game, allowing one earned run in his five innings of work.

Bowdoin out-hit the Jumbos in the first game with nine, including a 3 for 3 game by freshman Pat Duchette (Wales, ME).
