Game Box Score

MEDFORD – The Tufts Baseball team scored in double-figures for the fourth straight game with a 12-3 victory over Bentley College on Wednesday afternoon at Huskins Field. After scoring just 24 runs in nine games during their spring trip, Tufts has now scored 47 runs in its first four games up north.

Jumbos Kyle Backstrom (Worcester, MA), Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) and Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA) all had three runs batted in for Tufts, who improved to 8-5 overall. Bentley (5-12) scored all of its runs in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded triple by junior 3B Chad Mastin (Newmarket, NH).

Tufts had surged to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the second and three in the third off Bentley starter Steve Schedin (Lynnfield, MA). They hit two triples in the third, including one by Decembrele that scored two runs.

Bentley pulled to within 5-3 in the fifth when singles by Tim Denehy (Norwood, MA) and Steve Gath (Reading, MA) helped set the table for Mastin. However, Tufts responded with a six-run fifth to lead 11-3. Backstrom's bases-loaded double was the big hit, one of five by the Jumbos in the inning as 11 men came to the plate.

O'Leary, who finished 3 for 4 and scored two runs in his first start up north, had a RBI single to complete Tufts' scoring in the seventh. The Jumbos left 13 runners on base in addition to scoring the 12 runs as they lit up four Bentley pitchers for 17 hits and seven walks.

Tufts starter Zak Smotherman (Westborough, MA) held Bentley off the scoreboard until the fifth and earned the win to even his record at 1-1. Jumbo relievers Adam Telian (Stoughton, MA), Jeremy Davis (Little Falls, NY), Erik Johanson (Wynnewood, PA) and Aaron Narva (Albuquerque, NM) combined for four hitless innings to finish off the Falcons.

Backstrom finished 2 for 5 with two runs, senior catcher Greg Hickey (Medway, MA) was 2 for 3 with two runs, Decembrele had a 2 for 4 day with two runs and sophomore 2B Brian Casey (Milford, MA) went 3 for 5 with a run. Junior GJ Vicente (Salem, NH) was 2 for 4 at the top of the Falcon batting order.
