LEWISTON, Me. -- The Tufts University Baseball team wrapped up its NESCAC East Division schedule with a 5-1 victory at Bates College on Thursday afternoon. The game was the last of the three played between the two teams in the divisional series, and it was a make-up from a rain out on April 2.

Jumbo junior starter Ben Simon (Providence, RI) fired a complete game 6-hitter, leading the Jumbos. Simon improved his record to 5-0 and beat Bates for the second time this season.

Tufts jumped ahead of the Bobcats in the first inning, scoring two runs off of Bates starter Danny Bousquet (Brooklyn, NY). Junior RF Jim O'Leary (North Easton, MA) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. After a strikeout, sophomore 1B Bryan McDavitt (Holden, MA) walked and stole second base. With two runners in scoring position, sophomore CF Chris Decembrele (Walpole, MA) singled scoring both base runners.

Tufts had increased its lead to 5-0 before the Bobcats were able to get on the scoreboard. Decembrele added another RBI with a single in the fifth. Tufts then scored twice in the sixth on singles by junior SS Greg Chertok (New City, NY) and McDavitt.

Bates broke up the shutout with one out in the eighth inning. Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, MA) hit a liner to centerfield that eluded a diving Decembrele and rolled to the fence for a triple. Adam Worrall (Duxbury, MA) scored Mahoney with a fielders choice for Bates' only run.

Chertok (New City, NY) had three hits and an RBI to pace the Jumbos, and Decembrele added three RBIs. Seniors Charlie Engasser (Chanhassen, MN) and Nate Reid (Greenfield, MA) each collected two singles for the Bobcats.
